Build a Solid Foundation and Stop Slicing the Golf Ball!

I believe there are three keys in setting up and eliminating the slicing action of the golf ball.  First and foremost, lay a golf club down on the ground or invest in an alignment training aid and use that to identify your target line, what you are intending to hit the golf ball towards.

Now that you have identified your target line and you are not just hitting golf ball after golf ball, match your shoulders and hips with the golf club lying on the ground in front of you.  At this point your shoulders, forearms, hips, knees, feet and clubface should be pointing at your target.

My thoughts are, if you set up square to your target with all your matching body parts parallel to your target line, now you are setup in the correct position to make a natural swing.  Once you are setup correctly, now focus intently on finishing the swing, pivoting and standing tall over the front foot.  If you get to this position in your finish, imagine wearing a belt, that belt should be pointing directly at your target.

Tips to help you get to your ideal finish position.

  1. Walk through Drill-  Setup normal, after impact takes your rear foot and step towards your target, which will help you finish the swing.
  2. Freeze Drill-  Make a normal swing and hold the finish for 5 seconds and freeze.  This will help you become more familiar with your finish position in your golf swing.
  3. Tee Drill-  Push a golf tee in the butt end of the grip at the end of the club, make a normal swing, hold the finish over your front foot and point the tee directly at the target.

With these drills, spend a moment or two evaluating your balance, and footwork.  Hopefully this helps all you golfers eliminate the slice and helps you find more enjoyment playing this great game!
